Journey Through Jordan: Two Weeks In The Other Holy Land

Our journey through Jordan was an unforgettable tapestry of history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes. Over the course of our trip, we immersed ourselves in the legacy of ancient civilizations, savored local cuisine, and experienced the warm hospitality that Jordan is renowned for. This was a Gate 1 Discovery Tour, with the first two days being our own self-guided add-on.

Journey Through Jordan gate 1 logo

Our tour guide, Omar, was the best guide we have had on any Gate 1 tour (or any other guided tour) we have taken. These are my reflection on that tour that stretched from the storied ruins of Jerash and Petra to the vibrant cultural hubs in Amman and Madaba, as well as the dramatic desert landscapes of Wadi Rum and the sun-kissed shores of Aqaba.

Journey Through Jordan Self-Guided Tour

Our journey began with our flight from Raleigh to London on American Airlines. We upgraded that flight from economy to Premium Economy. Was it worth the extra money? We thought so. When we arrived in London, we spent our layover at the Galleries South Lounge. The lounge was spacious, clean and well-stocked with a variety of dining options. It was the best thing about our otherwise tragic experience with British Airways. Speaking of which, the decline in my opinion of British Airways began with our trip from London to Amman. The lack of seat recline on a five-hour flight was simply a nonstarter for me.

Umm Qais and the Jesus Cave

We settled in for our Jordan vacation at the Grand Hyatt in Amman. The hotel provided an amazing home-base for our self-exploration as well as the starting point for our organized tour. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, the food options exceptional and the service impeccable. We woke up early to spend the next day exploring Umm Qais, and the Jesus Cave, which we booked through TripAdvisor. Our visit to the Roman ruins that were once part of the Decapolis were amazing. The experience was enhanced by the great cultural interactions we had with our driver, Mohammad. He ensured we tasted some local flavors and spent time sharing his passion for the culture of Jordan.

We spent our first evening sharing a nice dinner at Sheen Restaurant which was walking distance from our hotel. After a nice meal, we headed back to the Grand Hyatt to prepare for another full day of self-touring.

Mukawir and Short Madaba Visit

The following day we had another tour planned through TripAdvisor. We were met in the lobby by our driver, Basel, who was another great ambassador for Jordan. Basel furthered our knowledge of Jordanian culture as we traveled to Mukawir, where we visited the ruins of the palace where John the Baptist was executed. We had the ruins to ourselves, which offered a unique experience for quiet reflection.

We took a quick side trip to an amazing overlook at Wadi Mujib before backtracking to Madaba. In Madaba, we asked Basel for an option other than Saint George’s Church since we would be visiting again later in the week. Basel suggested the Church of Saint John, which ended up being an exceptional recommendation. We finished with a stop at Mount Nebo, which we also returned to later in the week for a more thorough visit.

Basel drove us back to Amman after an amazing day of sightseeing. We asked for his recommendations for a great restaurant. Basel offered several choices, so we opted for the one closest to our hotel. Basel dropped us off at Umm Khalil, which was an exceptional dining experience. The food was outstanding. My wife and I would probably have guessed this would be our best dining experience in Jordan. But one restaurant actually topped this great experience (you will have to read down to our stay at the Dead Sea to find out more)!

Journey Through Jordan – Ancient Wonders and Cultural Treasures

Our time with Gate 1 began the following day. We were met in the Grand Hyatt lobby by Omar, our guide for the next two weeks. Omar has an engaging way of relating Jordanian culture, often through his own family and experiences. His attentiveness, knowledge and expertise lent themselves to a vacation experience that left my wife and I impressed. The tour itself was amazing, but Omar took that experience to another level. The Gate 1 experiences are based on region rather than itinerary, to keep things a bit more concise. But suffice it to say that this was one of the best, if not the best tour we have ever taken. Omar was definitely the best tour guide.

Jerash: A Roman Masterpiece

Our day began in northern Jordan with a visit to Jerash, one of the world’s best-preserved ancient Roman cities. Strolling through the grand Hadrian’s Arch, we marveled at the colonnaded streets, sprawling public squares, and impressive theaters that once hosted thousands of spectators. We took our time exploring both the Roman ruins and the intriguing Byzantine churches scattered throughout the site.

Mosaics at Church of St. John and Damian at Jerash
Mosaics still intact at Church of St. Cosmos and Damian

The mosaics and inscriptions in these churches, including the Church of St. Cosmos and Damian and the Church of St. John the Baptist, gave us a fascinating glimpse into the city’s later Christian heritage. We had a memorable lunch at Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature, before heading back to Amman. Before returning to our hotel, we made a stop at the Royal Automobile Museum

Amman and Madaba: Layers of History

In Amman, we delved into the rich tapestry of Jordan’s past at the Amman Citadel and the Roman Theater. The Citadel’s ancient walls, the towering remains of the Temple of Hercules, and the panoramic views of modern Amman provided a striking contrast between past and present.

Ummayad Mosque at The Citadel

In nearby Madaba, we visited Saint George’s Church, home to the world-famous mosaic map of the Holy Land, and took time to explore Jordan Jewel Art & Mosaic, where we admired the exquisite craftsmanship of local artisans—even if the prices were a bit beyond our reach. We also enjoyed a family-style lunch at Haret Jdoudna, where traditional Jordanian dishes and a warm, bustling atmosphere perfectly captured local hospitality.

Journey Through Jordan – Timeless Petra and the Majesty of Wadi Rum

Petra: The Rose City

No visit to Jordan would be complete without experiencing Petra. Our visit was enhanced by a great experience staying at the Movenpick Hotel. We were enchanted by the dramatic entrance through the Siq, the narrow canyon that led us to the magnificent Treasury (Al-Khazneh), its ornate façade bathed in the soft desert light. Our exploration continued through ancient streets lined with royal tombs and hidden chapels, culminating in a challenging yet rewarding hike up to The Monastery (Ad Deir).

Despite the strenuous climb, the panoramic views from the top were worth every step. We also enriched our cultural experience by visiting the Petra Museum, which provided invaluable context about the Nabataean civilization that once thrived in this “Rose City.” Aside from great meals at the hotel, we had a unique dining experience at The Cave Bar.This unique restaurant is found inside a first century Nabataean tomb. As we departed Petra, we took an hour to explore Little Petra, an extension of the once massive civilization.

Wadi Rum: Desert Adventure

Venturing into the vast desert, we experienced the rugged beauty of Wadi Rum. We embarked on an exhilarating 4×4 and camel tour that took us through dramatic sandstone canyons and ancient rock formations. The endless desert landscape, with its majestic dunes and deep canyons, was both humbling and inspiring. Our stay at Sun City Camp in Wadi Rum allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the serene desert environment—enjoying traditional Bedouin hospitality, starry nights, and the calm that only the desert can provide.

Journey Through Jordan – Coastal Charm in Aqaba

Aqaba: Sun, Sea, and Culture

Our coastal adventures continued in Aqaba, where we experienced the perfect blend of luxury and relaxation. We stayed at the Kempinski Hotel Aqaba, where our room offered spectacular views of the Red Sea, especially at sunset. The hotel’s prime beach location provided easy access to local restaurants, vibrant souks, and a host of water activities.

In addition to enjoying the hotel amenities and delicious dining options, we also visited cultural hotspots like Aqaba Castle and dined at local favorites such as Khashoka Aqaba and Berenice Beach Club. Each venue offered its own unique charm, from upscale dining experiences with panoramic sea views to lively beachfront atmospheres that captured the essence of coastal Jordan. An interesting cultural endeavor we participated in was creating sand art. We visited Aqabawi Art Studio where we learned how to make sand art. While my camel looked more like a four-legged ostrich, the experience was fun and informative.

Journey Through Jordan – Relaxation and Reflection at the Dead Sea

During our journey to the Dead Sea, we made a couple of amazing stops. This included our visit to Smakieh Christian School. This stop added another meaningful layer to our understanding of the region’s contemporary educational and cultural landscape. We continued on to visit Kerak Castle, where layers of history span eons. Our day of cultural immersion was completed with a home-hosted lunch. We were invited into a Jordanian home where we were treated to the traditional dish called Maqlouba.

Luxury & Relaxation at the Kempinski Hotel Dead Sea

After days of sightseeing, we checked into the Kempinski Hotel Ishtar for a two-night stay. The resort was pure luxury, offering stunning views of the Dead Sea, multiple pools, and direct access to the famous salty waters.

  • Floating in the Dead Sea was a surreal experience.
  • The hotel’s service was top-notch, and our room was spacious and comfortable.
  • The pools and spa facilities provided a relaxing break from the intense heat.

Bethany Beyond Jordan

Our final sightseeing excursion was to Bethany Beyond Jordan. After two weeks of amazing weather, our day began with a steady rain. As our bus ambled towards the historic site, Omar gave us an exceptional history of the discovery of this site. Interestingly, Omar studied under the professor who discovered these incredible ruins.

Chapel at Bethany Beyond Jordan

Based on biblical texts, sixth century pilgrim letters and the assistance of a geologist, they were able to pinpoint this location. The remains of both a first century chapel and fifth century basilica corroborate both biblical texts and ancient letters. After passing through military checkpoints, we were able to experience this ancient site that is possibly the most important Christian site in Jordan. We left with a deep appreciation of the efforts Jordan is making to prevent development to preserve the wilderness feel of the historic ruins.

Dining at Rehan Lebanese Restaurant

During our stay at the Kempinski Hotel, we enjoyed two breakfasts and two dinners at Rehan Lebanese Restaurant.

  • Breakfast: A fantastic selection of fresh bread, mezzes, eggs, and fruit.
  • Dinner: We tried grilled fish, mixed grill, creamy hummus, and a milk cream dessert.
  • Farewell Dinner: A spread of fresh bread, cold mezzes, and grilled kebabs.

The service was outstanding, with Rami and his team (Masri, Hasan, and Khaled) making sure we had an unforgettable dining experience.

Reflections on Our Journey Through Jordan

Our return trip was a mess, with British Airways canceling our flight last minute. However, we were able to rebook on Royal Jordanian Airways, which was a better experience than British Airways. We were also impressed by the Royal Jordanian Crown Lounge at the Queen Alia Airport, where we waited for our flight. We enjoyed coffee from the Crown Cafe as we reminisced about our favorite aspects of our journey.

Our adventure in Jordan was a richly layered experience that seamlessly blended ancient history with modern comforts. We traversed the ancient ruins of Jerash and Petra, marveled at the historical treasures of Amman and Madaba, and embraced the rugged beauty of Wadi Rum and the coastal allure of Aqaba. Each destination offered unique insights into the region’s storied past and vibrant present—from the intricate mosaics and grand monuments to the friendly local vendors and warm hospitality.

If you’re a history enthusiast, a lover of natural beauty, or simply someone in search of a culturally enriching adventure, Jordan is a destination that promises to leave a lasting impression. Our journey was filled with memorable experiences, each offering a glimpse into the soul of this remarkable country. We definitely encourage anyone interested in traveling to Jordan to push forward. The Gate 1 Discovery Tour was an excellent option. We would recommend this destination whether you book through a travel agency or explore on your own.

Last-Minute Flight with Royal Jordanian: Amman to New York

After our British Airways flight was abruptly canceled at the last minute, we found ourselves scrambling for an alternative way home. With few options available, we ended up purchasing last-minute one-way tickets on Royal Jordanian Airlines at Queen Alia International Airport (AMM)—just a few hours before departure. While the tickets were very expensive for economy class, the flight itself turned out to be a solid experience overall.

Royal Jordanian Airlines

Check-In & Boarding

Despite the stress of the last-minute booking, the check-in process was smooth and efficient. The Royal Jordanian staff were friendly and helpful, which made the situation a little less frustrating. Security and immigration also moved quickly, and we made it to the gate with time to spare.

Boarding was organized and efficient, and we were relieved to finally have a confirmed way home.

Royal Jordanian In-Flight Experience

Seating & Comfort

Royal Jordanian Airlines economy seats.

We were seated in economy class, and while we expected a tight squeeze, we were pleasantly surprised to find an empty seat between us, which made the long-haul flight much more comfortable.

  • Legroom felt slightly more generous than some other airlines.
  • Seats had a decent recline, making it easier to rest.
  • The aircraft appeared to be a bit older, but it was clean and well-maintained

Food & Service

For economy class, the food was decent but nothing exceptional. The meal service was efficient, and the flight attendants were professional and courteous throughout the flight. While the meal wasn’t particularly memorable, it was perfectly fine for a long-haul flight.

Royal Jordanian Airlines economy class meal.

Entertainment System

Each seat had a seatback entertainment screen with a good selection of movies, TV shows, and music. However, the system used the older two-prong headphone jacks, which was a bit outdated. Fortunately, the airline provided headphones and adapters, allowing us to use our own noise-canceling headphones without an issue.

Final Thoughts on Royal Jordanian

Given the circumstances, our Royal Jordanian flight from Amman to JFK turned out to be a solid and comfortable experience. While the last-minute tickets were extremely expensive, the flight itself was smooth and hassle-free.

Pros:

  • Friendly and efficient check-in process
  • Extra seat between us made the flight more comfortable
  • Decent legroom and seat recline for economy class
  • Good selection of in-flight entertainment
  • Helpful and professional staff

Cons:

  • Extremely expensive last-minute tickets
  • Older aircraft with slightly outdated entertainment system

Would we fly Royal Jordanian again? Yes—under normal circumstances and at a reasonable price. Despite the high last-minute fare, the overall experience was comfortable and hassle-free, which was exactly what we needed after the British Airways debacle.

Travel Nightmare: Our British Airways Cancellation Experience

Our return trip from Amman, Jordan (AMM) to Raleigh, North Carolina (RDU) with British Airways turned into a frustrating and costly ordeal due to their last-minute flight cancellation and poor customer service. What should have been a straightforward journey home instead became a stressful, expensive, and time-consuming process that we are still dealing with weeks later.

Last-Minute Flight Cancellation

We arrived at Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) expecting a routine check-in for our British Airways flight back to the U.S. However, we were shocked to learn that the airline had canceled our flight due to “operational issues”—without prior notice. The most frustrating part? British Airways waited until we arrived at the airport to inform us, leaving us scrambling for alternatives.

This cancellation was not just an inconvenience; it would have delayed our return home by an entire day, which was simply not an option for us.

No Support from British Airways at the Airport

Adding to the frustration, there were no British Airways representatives at AMM to assist us. Stranded and without guidance, we attempted to contact British Airways by phone to rebook our flights. Unfortunately, their customer service was unhelpful and unwilling to assist in finding an alternative route.

With no options provided by the airline, we were forced to purchase expensive, last-minute, one-way tickets on Royal Jordanian (British Airways’ code share partner) to ensure we got home on time. This unexpected expense was not something we had budgeted for. The experience left us feeling abandoned by British Airways.

A Nightmare in Cancelling & Seeking Reimbursement

The issues with British Airways did not end once we managed to book our alternative flights. Canceling our return flights proved to be an ordeal in itself.

When we arrived at JFK for our layover, we attempted to speak with British Airways representatives in person, hoping for some resolution. They were unable to assist. We then turned to their phone support and online portal, only to experience inefficient communication, long delays, and poor customer service.

It has now been seventeen days since our scheduled return flight, and British Airways has still not reimbursed us for our canceled flights or the additional expenses we incurred. Their communication remains inconsistent, with responses that fail to provide clear resolutions.

Final Thoughts on British Airways

We understand that flight cancellations happen, but how an airline handles disruptions is what defines a good customer experience. British Airways failed at every step.

  • No advance notice of cancellation
  • No airline representatives at the airport to assist
  • No help via phone in rebooking alternative flights
  • Difficult and inefficient cancellation process
  • Severe delays in processing reimbursements
  • Poor communication from the airline, even weeks later

For an airline that claims to be a leader in international travel, British Airways’ handling of this situation was completely unacceptable. We will think twice before booking with them again and caution other travelers to be prepared for poor customer service if anything goes wrong.

A Relaxing Escape: Royal Jordanian Crown Lounge in Amman

As we prepared for our departure from Jordan, we had the opportunity to spend some time at the Royal Jordanian Crown Lounge in Amman. It is located in the International Terminal at Queen Alia International Airport. After an incredible journey through Jordan, this lounge provided the perfect space to unwind, refresh, and enjoy some final moments of comfort before our flight.

One of the highlights of our visit was the impressive selection of food and drinks available. The buffet included a mix of Middle Eastern and international dishes, with fresh salads, hot entrees, and a variety of snacks. The hummus and traditional Jordanian mezze were excellent, while the hot dishes provided a satisfying pre-flight meal.

For drinks, there was a self-serve bar with soft drinks, juices, coffee, tea, and a selection of alcoholic beverages. The Arabic coffee was a must-try, offering a final taste of Jordan before our departure. The coffee, served barista-style, was a highlight of the lounge.

The lounge is well-equipped with modern amenities, including:

Plenty of charging stations, ensuring all our devices were fully powered before boarding.

Final Thoughts: A Comfortable Pre-Flight Experience

Our time at the Royal Jordanian Crown Lounge was a great way to end our journey through Jordan. The combination of comfortable seating, quality food, and excellent amenities made for a relaxing pre-flight experience.

If you’re flying Royal Jordanian Business Class or have access through a Priority Pass or Oneworld membership, this lounge is definitely worth a visit. It’s a calm oasis in the busy airport and a great way to prepare for your next journey.

Bethany Beyond Jordan: The Accurate Baptism Site of Jesus

One of the most profound and spiritually significant stops on our journey through Jordan was our visit to Bethany Beyond Jordan. Also known as Al-Maghtas, it is the baptism site of Jesus Christ. Located along the east bank of the Jordan River, this UNESCO World Heritage site is believed to be the very place where John the Baptist baptized Jesus. Thus, it one of the most revered Christian pilgrimage sites in the world.

A Sacred and Historical Destination

Bethany Beyond Jordan is not just a place of religious significance. It is also a site of incredible archaeological and historical value. Biblical references, historical texts, and excavations confirm that early Christian communities recognized this location as the authentic site of Jesus’ baptism. Today, visitors can explore the ancient churches, baptismal pools, and remnants of early Christian settlements that date back over 2,000 years.

Bethany Beyond Jordan

Arriving at the Bethany Beyond Jordan Baptism Site

Our guide took us through the serene and protected Jordan River Valley. The landscape was peaceful, with lush greenery, tamarisk trees, and reeds lining the banks of the river. As we walked along the path, our guide provided fascinating insights into the history of the site. He pointed out key landmarks, including ancient ruins of Byzantine and Roman churches.

Bethany Beyond Jordan. Ruins of three ancient Byzantine Churches that were built on top of each other near the baptism site.

Standing at the Baptismal Pools

One of the most moving moments of our visit was standing at the baptismal site itself. The spot is marked by the foundations of an ancient church and a set of stone steps leading down to the water. It was awe-inspiring to imagine the events that unfolded here centuries ago. It was a rainy day when we visited. It was surreal as we approached the baptism site and the clouds parted. As the sun appeared in the sky, we were touched by this small happenstance. Was it divine? Was it coincidence? That really doesn’t matter. It made the visit even more special for us.

Bethany Beyond Jordan. The foundations of a First Century Church that marks the spot early Christian pilgrims believed the baptism took place.

Although the river has since shifted course, the historical baptismal pools, where pilgrims from as early as the 5th century came to be baptized, remain a testament to the site’s enduring sacredness. It was a moment of reflection and reverence. We recognized that we were standing in a place of deep spiritual and historical significance.

The Jordan River & Modern Baptisms

A short distance away, we reached the modern baptismal area, where the Jordan River now flows. The river itself is narrow and tranquil, with pilgrims from around the world gathered in white robes, immersing themselves in the waters as part of a spiritual renewal. On the opposite bank, we could see Israel’s baptismal site at Qasr al-Yahud. The presence of an adjoining site highlights how this sacred location is shared across faiths and nations.

Bethany Beyond Jordan

Bethany Beyond Jordan Was A Profound Experience

Visiting Bethany Beyond Jordan was a deeply meaningful experience. Whether you come for religious, historical, or personal reasons, the site offers a unique opportunity to connect with biblical history and the roots of Christianity. The peaceful atmosphere, combined with the powerful significance of the location, made this visit one of the most memorable stops on our journey through Jordan.

It was a rainy day when we arrived. On queue, as we arrived at the precise baptism site, the clouds parted and the sun appeared. It was surreal.

If you’re traveling to Jordan, we highly recommend adding Bethany Beyond Jordan to your itinerary. It’s a place of faith, history, and reflection, where the past feels incredibly present.

First Dinner at Rehan Lebanese Restaurant: A Feast of Flavor

For our first dinner at Rehan, we were excited to explore the menu’s selection of Lebanese specialties. We began with hummus, and it was one of the creamiest, most flavorful versions we’ve ever had. The texture was smooth, rich, and perfectly balanced with olive oil and warm bread. Alongside it, we enjoyed a side of crispy French fries, a simple but satisfying addition to our meal.

For our mains, my wife opted for fish, which was perfectly cooked with delicate seasoning that allowed the natural flavors to shine. I chose the mixed grill, a delicious combination of chicken, and beef skewers. The meat was expertly grilled and bursting with smoky, savory goodness. To finish, we shared a milk cream dessert, which was light, creamy, and subtly sweet, making for a perfect ending to an already outstanding meal.

A Farewell Dinner to Remember

Our final dinner at Rehan was not just a meal—it was a celebration. As the farewell dinner for our tour, it was a fitting way to conclude an incredible journey through Jordan.

The Kempinski offers several fantastic dining options. While there are several options, we took our meals at Rehan Lebanese Restaurant. This included two breakfasts and two lunches. We ate at some amazing restaurants on our trip, but Rehan stood out as phenomenal.

Home-Hosted Maqlouba Feast: A Taste of Jordanian Hospitality

One of the most memorable experiences of our journey through Jordan wasn’t in a famous archaeological site or an ancient castle. It was in a warm and welcoming home near Kerak. We had the privilege of sharing a home-hosted maqlouba feast with a local family. We were treated to Maqlouba, one of Jordan’s most beloved traditional dishes. This meal wasn’t just about the food; it was about connection, culture, and the incredible hospitality of the Jordanian people.

Home-Hosted Maqlouba Feast

A Warm Welcome Into a Jordanian Home

Arriving at our host’s home, we were greeted with genuine warmth and kindness. Our hosts, a mother and her daughter, welcomed us as if we were longtime friends. They ushered us into their cozy home, where the aromas of spices, simmering meat, and roasted vegetables filled the air. The aromas teased our appetites before we even sat down.

We gathered in the kitchen, where our host explained the preparation of Maqlouba. The name means “upside down” in Arabic. This traditional meal is a one-pot wonder. It is comprised of layers of rice, meat (usually chicken or lamb), and vegetables. The ingredients are slow-cooked together with fragrant spices like cinnamon, turmeric, and cardamom. The real magic happens when the pot is flipped upside down onto a serving platter, revealing a beautifully stacked dish.

Home-Hosted Maqlouba Feast: A Culinary Celebration

As the moment arrived to unveil the Maqlouba, we all watched eagerly. With practiced skill, our host flipped the pot in one swift motion, carefully lifting it to reveal the layered masterpiece. The rice was perfectly fluffy, the chicken tender, and the roasted eggplant and potatoes added a delicious depth of flavor.

Home-Hosted Maqlouba Feast

We served ourselves from a large communal plate—a true Jordanian dining experience, although we did adjusted a bit to eat from individual plates. But we were able to layer all the flavors from the communal dishes onto our plates, for an almost traditional experience. We sat facing each other around the room, enjoying the feast immensely. This style of eating felt intimate and familial, a reminder that meals in Jordan are about more than just nourishment—they’re about togetherness.

More Than Just a Meal: A Cultural Exchange

As we ate, we chatted about family, traditions, and daily life in Jordan. Our host and her daughter were eager to share stories, and we learned about the importance of hospitality in Jordanian culture. Guests are treated with great honor, and sharing a meal is considered one of the highest expressions of generosity.

Home-Hosted Maqlouba Feast

To finish, we were served hot mint tea and sweets, adding the perfect ending to an already unforgettable afternoon. The warmth of the conversation, the laughter, and the generosity of our hosts made us feel like we were part of their family, if only for a night.

An Unforgettable Home-Hosted Maqlouba Feast

Our home-hosted dinner near Kerak was more than just an opportunity to taste authentic Jordanian cuisine—it was a heartfelt experience that reminded us of the universal power of food to bring people together. No restaurant or tourist attraction could have replicated the warmth, authenticity, and joy we felt that evening.

If you ever find yourself in Jordan, and are fortunate enough to enjoy a home-hosted meal, take advantage of it! It’s a chance to not only taste incredible food but also to experience the heart of Jordanian culture—its hospitality, generosity, and the deep-rooted traditions that make this country so special.

Kerak Castle: Unraveling the Secrets of A Crusader Fortress

During our recent trip to Jordan, we had the opportunity to explore one of the country’s most formidable historical sites—Kerak Castle. Perched atop a rugged hill overlooking the city of Al-Karak, this massive fortress is a striking reminder of the Crusader era and the battles that once shaped the region.

A Fortress of History and Power

While Kerak Castle is best known as a Crusader stronghold, its history stretches back much further. The area was an important strategic site long before the Crusaders arrived in the 12th century. During the biblical era, it was part of the ancient kingdom of Moab. Later, it played a role in Nabataean and Roman times.

Remnants of a Nabataean sculpture repurposed from it's former location to form part of a wall.

The Byzantines also recognized its significance. They built fortifications here centuries before the Crusaders constructed the massive stone citadel that still dominates the landscape today. This deep-rooted history makes Kerak not just a Crusader relic, but a site of continuous military and cultural significance through the ages.

Exploring the Kerak Castle Grounds

From the moment we stepped inside, we were struck by the castle’s sheer size and the ingenuity of its construction. Unlike the well-preserved castles of Europe, Kerak has a more rugged and imposing presence. We explored several underground tunnels, massive storage halls, and remnants of old kitchens and stables. The castle’s layered design, with both Crusader and later Mamluk additions, showcases its long and storied past.

One of the highlights of our visit was venturing into the dimly lit passageways beneath the castle. These underground chambers, once used for storage and refuge during sieges, gave us a sense of the challenges defenders faced centuries ago. The walls seemed to whisper tales of resilience, conquest, and survival.

Breathtaking Views from the Battlements

Climbing to the highest points of the fortress, we were rewarded with panoramic views of the Jordanian landscape. The rolling hills, the town of Al-Karak below, and the distant desert stretching toward the Dead Sea made for an unforgettable sight. It’s easy to see why this location was chosen for a stronghold. It commands an impressive vantage point over the surrounding terrain.

Kerak Castle stands as a testament to Jordan’s layered history, where Crusader, Islamic, and Ottoman influences intertwine. Visiting this site wasn’t just about exploring a medieval fortress; it was about experiencing a chapter of history that shaped the region.

Final Thoughts on Kerak Castle

As we left the castle, we couldn’t help but reflect on the centuries of conflict and resilience that unfolded within these walls. Kerak Castle is more than just an ancient relic. It’s a symbol of endurance, a place where the past and present meet atop the windswept hills of Jordan.
