Exceptional Coffee and Local Flavors

As coffee enthusiasts, we were thrilled to discover that Ranti takes pride in serving high-quality, locally sourced coffee. Their menu featured a range of options, from classic espressos to indulgent iced coffees and lattes. On our final visit, we opted for an iced mocha and a tangerine coffee, both of which were expertly crafted. The rich, smooth flavor of the coffee was a testament to the care and skill of the baristas. I was particularly surprised that I liked the blend of citrus and coffee. While it sounded a bit extreme to me, the flavors complemented each other well.

In addition to coffee, Ranti offered a selection of fresh pastries and snacks. On our first visit, my son and I shared a slice of vegan chocolate cake. The cake was moist and delicious. The shop also featured some unique Galápagos-inspired treats, showcasing local ingredients and flavors. As a bonus, we were able to pick up a bottle of coffee-infused rum that was also produced locally. The rum is aged in US-sourced oak barrels.

Our visit to Ranti Coffee Shop was more than just a coffee break—it was a chance to connect with the island’s culture. The friendly staff, delicious offerings, and relaxed ambiance made it a place we were tempted to revisit again and again. The staff are often drawn from among the families who grow the beans. This was the case with the young lady who was working on our first visit to the shop.

The menu at The Post Office featured a delightful selection of dishes that celebrated local flavors. We started with a refreshing ceviche, packed with fresh seafood and tangy citrus notes that perfectly complemented the warm evening. I don’t eat seafood, but my wife and my son seemed to thoroughly enjoy it.

For our mains, we opted for fish and chips, steak and the house special Brujo De Galapagos (Scorpion fish). The fish was expertly prepared and seasoned with bold, tropical flavors. The portions were generous, and the side dishes—such as plantains and rice—added a comforting touch to the meal. My steak was a bit on the tough side, but I found that to be the case throughout Ecuador.

Our Galápagos adventure reached new heights with a day tour to Española Island, one of the most spectacular destinations in the archipelago. Known for its incredible biodiversity and breathtaking landscapes, Española is a must-visit for nature lovers. It is an awesome opportunity for a closer connection with the unique wildlife of the Galápagos.

Marine Iguana on Española Island

Setting Off From San Cristóbal to Española Island

The day began early as we boarded our boat from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. The ride to Española took about two hours, giving us plenty of time to enjoy the views of the open sea. Our guide provided an engaging overview of the island’s history, ecology, and what we could expect to encounter. Our anticipation was building for the adventure ahead.

Punta Suárez: A Wildlife Wonderland

Our first stop on Española was Punta Suárez, a rocky outcropping teeming with life. As soon as we landed, we were greeted by colonies of sea lions lounging on the beach. They seemed completely unfazed by our presence. The trail through Punta Suárez is a haven for birdwatchers, and we were thrilled to spot waved albatrosses, blue-footed boobies, and Nazca boobies.

The highlight of the trail was witnessing the courtship dance of the waved albatrosses—a mesmerizing display of head bobbing, bill clapping, and coordinated movements. These graceful birds are endemic to Española, and seeing them in their natural habitat was an unforgettable experience.

Further along the trail, we encountered marine iguanas basking on the black lava rocks. Their striking colors, ranging from red to green, were a vivid reminder of Española’s uniqueness. The blowhole, a natural fissure in the rocks that sends water spouting high into the air, provided an exhilarating finale to our hike.

Gardner Bay: Snorkeling and Relaxation

After our hike, we headed to Gardner Island just off the northeast coast of Espanola. Here, we had the chance to snorkel alongside a variety of marine life, including colorful parrotfish, playful sea lions, and even a few curious sea turtles. This open-water snorkeling was a bit disconcerting at first, but ended up being the highlight of our tour.

Starfish on rock face of Gardner Island

As we navigated along the sheer cliff face off Gardner Island, we were able to see a wide variety of sea life. Along with the animals previously listed, I was particularly impressed with the black-tailed reef sharks that visited us. They kept their distance, but they added a cool factor to our adventure. These two photos are taken from an underwater video that don’t do the experience justice.

A Day to Remember at Española Island

Our day tour to Española Island was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. From the enchanting wildlife of Punta Suárez to the tranquil waters of Gardner Bay, every moment was a reminder of the Galápagos’ extraordinary beauty and ecological significance. As a bonus, the school of dolphins below paid us a visit on our return trip. They were swimming directly under the boat and even sprayed us as they breached.

La Galapaguera: Giant Tortoises Having a Shell of a Time

The Galápagos Islands are famous for their incredible biodiversity. One of the most iconic species to encounter here is the giant tortoise. During our time on San Cristóbal Island, we had the privilege of visiting La Galapaguera de Cerro Colorado. This national park is a giant tortoise breeding center and sanctuary. The remarkable facility not only gave us the chance to see these majestic creatures up close but also provided an insightful look into the conservation efforts preserving their future.

Giant tortoise at La Glapaguera

The Journey to La Galapaguera

Nestled about 40 minutes from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, La Galapaguera is easily accessible by car or guided tour. The drive itself is scenic, winding through the island’s lush highlands with stunning views of rolling hills and endemic flora. As we approached the center, the landscape shifted into a semi-arid environment, a fitting habitat for the tortoises.

Two giant tortoises relaxing in a pool

The breeding center is well-maintained, with a network of trails leading visitors through enclosures where tortoises roam freely. Walking along these paths, we were greeted by the sight of numerous giant tortoises. We observed them basking in the sun, feeding on vegetation, or slowly making their way across the terrain. The sheer size and presence of these animals are awe-inspiring. While not something I might be otherwise inclined to do, it was worthwhile.

Learning About Conservation

La Galapaguera serves a crucial role in protecting the giant tortoises of San Cristóbal. The giant tortoise has faced threats from invasive predators and habitat loss. The center’s staff explained how they collect eggs from the wild, incubate them in controlled environments, and raise the hatchlings until they are strong enough to be released into their natural habitats.

Hatchling area. Young tortoises congregate in a corner.

Informative signage along the trails and exhibits within the facility highlighted the challenges these tortoises face and the ongoing efforts to ensure their survival. We were particularly fascinated by the stories of individual tortoises. Some are over a century old! These creatures provide vital contributions to the island’s ecosystem.

A Memorable Encounter

One of the most memorable parts of our visit was watching the younger tortoises in their dedicated enclosures. These tiny shelled creatures, just a few years old, were an adorable reminder of the cycle of life and the importance of conservation.

Giant Tortoise in the brush

We also had the opportunity to observe the behavior of the adults—how they interact, feed, and move at their leisurely pace. Their serene demeanor and resilience left a lasting impression on us, reminding us of the need to protect the natural world for generations to come.

Reflections on Our Visit to La Galapaguera

Visiting La Galapaguera was a highlight of our time on San Cristóbal. It’s a place where education and conservation come together, offering visitors a chance to connect with one of the Galápagos’ most iconic species while supporting the vital work being done to protect them.

Giant tortoise at La Galapaguera

If you’re visiting San Cristóbal, a trip to La Galapaguera is recommended. While it wasn’t something I would mark as a high priority, it was informative. It’s an opportunity to see giant tortoises up close while learning about conservancy efforts which have been very successful.

Exploring Quito: The Original Equator Monument and Real Line

A visit to Quito wouldn’t be complete without exploring its equatorial landmarks. While the Middle of the World City and its towering monument often steal the spotlight, there’s a fascinating history behind Ecuador’s equatorial explorations. On our journey, we visited the original equator monument and the true equatorial line, experiencing science, culture, and history in one memorable day.

Phone compass showing accurate equatorial line.

The Original Equator Monument

The original equator monument, built in the 1930s, stands as a testament to early geodetic exploration. Located a short distance from the newer Middle of the World City, this smaller, modest structure was constructed to honor the French Geodesic Mission of the 18th century. This mission aimed to pinpoint the exact location of the equator, advancing global understanding of Earth’s shape.

Original equator monument in Quito

Though groundbreaking in its time, this monument, like the larger one that succeeded it, is slightly off the true equatorial line. Standing here, however, felt like stepping into history. The area is less crowded, offering a peaceful contrast to the bustling tourist hub of Ciudad Mitad del Mundo. The original monument captures the pioneering spirit of those who first set out to map the equator.

Standing on the Actual Equator

After exploring the original monument, we headed to a nearby street where the actual equator is marked. We were able to use our phone GPS to validate the location. Here, we were able to straddle the actual equator and capture some great photos. While the area was nearly unmarked, with zero other people present, it was more impressive to me than the monument.

My wife standing on the actual equator where no tourists were present

Reflections

Visiting both the original equator monument and the real equatorial line provided a richer understanding of the region’s scientific and cultural significance. From the historical miscalculations to the modern-day experiments, each stop along the way offered something unique. While there is virtually nothing there than a short line across the road and markings on a wall, the real equator location was my favorite. Plain and nondescript. I am adding a map that shows where we were standing to make it easy to find for anyone interested.

Map of accurately marked equator line.

If you’re in Quito, we highly recommend exploring all three sites. Together, they create a comprehensive and engaging experience that highlights the equator’s enduring intrigue. Whether you’re a history buff, a science enthusiast, or a curious traveler, these landmarks are sure to leave you inspired. The new monument is super touristy. The original monument was in a quaint town and was located in a nice park, with no tourists. The actual equator runs around the world, so there are plenty of places you can locate it with GPS. But the map above show a place where it is marked so you can take photos.

Finca Cafetera Frajares: Mountain Air and Quality Coffee

Ecuador’s rich landscapes are renowned for their biodiversity, but they’re also home to some of the finest coffee-growing regions in the world. During our journey, we had the opportunity to visit Finca Cafetera Frajares. This family-owned coffee farm is dedicated to producing high-quality, sustainable coffee. Nestled in the lush hills, this visit was not just about tasting coffee but also about understanding the care and craftsmanship behind every bean.

Finca Cafetera Frajares

A Warm Welcome to Coffee Country

From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with the warmth and enthusiasm that defines Ecuadorian hospitality. The Frajares family welcomed us with freshly brewed coffee, offering an immediate taste of their expertise. The view from the finca was breathtaking. We sipped coffee to rolling green hills, misty valleys, and rows of coffee plants stretching as far as the eye could see.

Finca Cafetera Frajares farm

Our guide introduced us to the family as well as the farm’s history. Frajares has been cultivating coffee since 2012. The farm is located in Pichincha, Ecuador at 1,700 meters above sea level. Here the special climatic conditions give their Típica and Caturra varieties surprising flavors and aromas.

The Journey of the Coffee Bean

Our tour began with a walk through the coffee fields. We explored rows of vibrant green plants bearing clusters of red coffee cherries. We learned how altitude, climate, and soil composition contribute to the unique flavor profiles of Ecuadorian coffee. Our guide explained the meticulous process of hand-picking ripe cherries, ensuring only the best are selected.

We didn’t explore the process for drying the beans, opting instead to enjoy the cool mountain air with a cup of hot coffee. My son ordered the flat white while my wife ordered an Americano. I opted for the pressed coffee, which came with a very precise demonstration of measuring beans, measuring the water and timing the steep. It was an interesting blend that included the coffee cherry, giving it a mildly fruity flavor. The coffee was served with a nice piece of dark chocolate as well. The coffee demonstration was fun, if not a bit technical.

Final Thoughts on Finca Cafetera Frajares

Our visit to Finca Cafetera Frajares was more than just a coffee tour. It was an education in the art and science of coffee production, a celebration of Ecuador’s natural beauty, and a testament to the dedication of small-scale farmers.
