Quito Market Guide: Best Local Foods and Fresh Produce

One of the most immersive ways to experience a city’s culture is through its markets, and Quito is no exception. During our visit, we ventured into one of the city’s bustling local markets, a vibrant hub of activity where fresh produce, meats, and traditional meals converge. This wasn’t just a shopping trip; it was a sensory journey into the heart of Ecuadorian life.

Local Quito Market fruit section

A Kaleidoscope of Fresh Produce

As we entered the market, the first thing to catch our attention was the explosion of colors. Stalls were brimming with an array of fruits and vegetables, many of which were unfamiliar to us. From perfectly ripe papayas and sweet naranjillas to the exotic cherimoya and tangy tamarillos, it felt like we were walking through a catalog of Ecuador’s biodiversity.

Our local guide enthusiastically offered samples, and we couldn’t resist trying a few. The tropical fruits were bursting with flavor—sweet, tart, and refreshingly juicy. The variety was astonishing, and it was clear that these ingredients form the backbone of the city’s rich culinary traditions.

The Meat Section: A True Cultural Encounter

Venturing deeper into the market, we found ourselves in the meat section. While this part of the market might not be for the faint of heart, it offered an unfiltered glimpse into local life. Butchers expertly prepared cuts of beef, pork, and chicken, while nearby stalls displayed more unconventional offerings like tripe and guinea pig, a delicacy in Ecuador.

Despite the bustling atmosphere, there was an order to the chaos. Vendors chatted with customers, exchanging not just goods but also stories and smiles. It was fascinating to witness the deep-rooted relationships between the sellers and the community.

A Lunch to Remember at a Quito Market

No market visit would be complete without sampling the local cuisine, and we were drawn to the area where stalls served freshly prepared meals. The aroma of grilling meats, simmering soups, and sizzling empanadas was irresistible.

slow roasted pork

We chose a stall serving hornado, a traditional Ecuadorian dish of slow-roasted pork served with hominy, potatoes, and a spicy tomato-based sauce. The flavors were bold and comforting, perfectly paired with a glass of freshly made morocho, a warm corn-based drink flavored with cinnamon.

Chicharrones

We also sampled chicharrones, which was packed with flavor. The meal was served with caramelized plantain, hominy and beans. The meals were simple yet incredibly satisfying, made all the more special by the authenticity of the experience. Sharing a table with locals added a communal spirit to the meal. There didn’t appear to be another tourist in sight, which added to the sense of authenticity.

Tips for Visiting a Local Quito Market

  1. Bring Small Bills: Most vendors prefer cash, and smaller denominations make transactions easier.
  2. Try Something New: Be adventurous and sample unfamiliar fruits or dishes—you might discover a new favorite!
  3. Stay Open-Minded: Markets are lively and sometimes chaotic, but they offer an unmatched cultural experience.

Final Thoughts

Our visit to a Quito Market was more than just a shopping trip—it was an authentic dive into the city’s soul. The vibrant produce, the lively chatter of vendors, and the delicious traditional meals all combined to create a memorable and enriching experience.

If you’re visiting Quito, don’t miss the chance to explore a local market. It’s the perfect way to connect with Ecuador’s culture, flavors, and warm hospitality.

A Divine View: Our Visit to The Virgin of Quito

Towering gracefully above the city from her perch on El Panecillo hill, The Virgin of Quito, also known as La Virgen de El Panecillo, is one of Quito’s most iconic landmarks. This impressive statue, a symbol of protection and faith, is visible from almost anywhere in the city. It offers visitors an inspiring combination of art, culture, and breathtaking views.

Virgin of Quito Statue

Reaching El Panecillo

Our journey to The Virgin of Quito began with a scenic drive up El Panecillo, the small hill that rises prominently in the heart of Quito. Known for its panoramic vistas, the hill itself is a historical site once used by the indigenous people as a place of worship. Today, it’s crowned by this striking statue, which was inaugurated in 1975. It has since become a beloved symbol of the city.

As we approached the base of the monument, the sheer scale of the statue became apparent. Standing 135 feet tall, The Virgin of Quito is a modern masterpiece of aluminum construction. What sets her apart is her pose—winged and dynamic, she stands atop a globe, with a serpent underfoot, a representation of biblical imagery.

Virgin of Quito: Climbing to New Heights

Visitors can ascend the base of the statue, which serves as a small museum and viewing platform. Inside, we learned about the statue’s creation by Spanish artist Agustín de la Herrán Matorras. It was modeled after the 18th-century sculpture of the Virgin of Quito by Bernardo de Legarda. The fusion of traditional and modern elements adds a unique charm to this monumental work.

View of Quito from Virgin of Quito

Reaching the top of the platform, we were rewarded with awe-inspiring views of Quito. From this vantage point, the city stretches out in all directions. Our view was framed by the Andes mountains and dotted with colonial churches and modern skyscrapers. It was the perfect spot to take in the grandeur of the city while appreciating its cultural and spiritual heart.

A Spiritual and Cultural Experience

The Virgin of Quito isn’t just a statue; she’s a reminder of the city’s deep-rooted Catholic faith and rich history. Locals revere her as a protector of the city, and her presence on El Panecillo feels both majestic and serene. There was also a scaffolding-type statue called “Joseph” to the right of the Virgin statue during our visit. I am not sure if that sculpture is new or just temporary.

For us, this visit was a memorable blend of history, art, and natural beauty. Whether you’re drawn by the religious significance, the architectural marvel, or simply the incredible views, The Virgin of Quito is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Ecuador’s capital.

Tips for Visiting Virgin of Quito

  1. Go Early or Late: Visiting during the early morning or late afternoon offers fewer crowds. We went just after our early morning visit to Teleferico and had no trouble finding parking.
  2. Stay Safe: While the area is generally safe, it’s best to visit with a group or a guided tour for peace of mind.
  3. Take a Camera: The views from El Panecillo are some of the best in Quito. Don’t forget to capture the moment.

Final Thoughts

Our visit to The Virgin of Quito was both enlightening and inspiring, offering a deeper connection to the spirit of the city. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a lover of art, or a traveler seeking stunning vistas, this landmark has something for everyone.

Standing beneath her protective gaze, with the sprawling city of Quito at our feet, we couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of awe for this extraordinary destination.

Reaching New Heights: Our Visit to the Teleférico in Quito

Towering above Quito, the Teleférico offers an unforgettable experience that combines adventure, breathtaking views, and a touch of serenity. As one of the highest cable car rides in South America, this attraction is a must for anyone visiting Ecuador’s vibrant capital. Our visit to the Teleférico was a highlight of our time in Quito, giving us a new perspective on the city and its surrounding landscapes.

Teleférico base station

Ascending to the Clouds

The journey began at the Teleférico base station, located just a short drive from Quito’s city center. After purchasing our tickets, we boarded a cable car, excited for the ride ahead. The ascent was smooth and exhilarating, as the city gradually fell away beneath us.

View on the ascent on the Teleférico tram.

As we climbed to over 12,943 feet (3,945 meters) above sea level, the view expanded dramatically. Quito’s sprawling urban landscape, framed by lush green hills and majestic Andean peaks, was a sight to behold. On clear days, it’s even possible to spot the snow-capped Cotopaxi volcano in the distance, and we were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of its iconic cone.

View from atop Teleférico of Cotopaxi

Exploring the Summit

The Teleférico’s endpoint, known as Cruz Loma, offered a whole new world of exploration. The crisp mountain air and sweeping vistas made the journey worthwhile. We took our time wandering along the scenic trails, marveling at the stunning 360-degree views of Quito and the surrounding Andes.

Signt o Sendero Al Ruco Pichincha Volcano at Teleférico

For those seeking a bit more adventure, the summit is a popular starting point for hikes up the Rucu Pichincha Volcano. While we didn’t tackle the climb, we saw a few intrepid hikers gearing up for the trek. Even without a full hike, the peaceful atmosphere and panoramic views at the summit were a highlight of our visit.

Tips for Visiting the Teleférico

  1. Dress Warmly: Temperatures at the top can be chilly, especially if the wind picks up. Layers and a windbreaker are recommended.
  2. Acclimate to the Altitude: Quito is already high-altitude, and the Teleférico takes you even higher. Take it slow and drink plenty of water to avoid altitude sickness.
  3. Arrive Early: Morning visits often offer the clearest views, as afternoon clouds can obscure the landscape. We arrived shortly after opening in early December. There were no lines when we arrived, and we were able to park nearby.
  4. Take an Iconic Photo: The iconic photo for Teleferico is taken from the swings. Having arrived early, we were able to hop right on the swings without waiting. As you swing high, you can get great photos of Quito, as if you are soaring over the city.

The Teleférico is more than just a cable car ride—it’s a gateway to the stunning natural beauty that surrounds Quito. Whether you’re an avid hiker, a photography enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates incredible views, this experience is not to be missed.

Snorkeling at La Lobería: Immersed in San Cristobal’s Sea Life

The Galápagos Islands are known for their unparalleled marine biodiversity, and our snorkeling adventure at La Lobería on San Cristóbal Island exceeded every expectation. This beautiful spot, just a short ride from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, offered a perfect blend of stunning scenery, vibrant underwater life, and unforgettable encounters with the islands’ iconic wildlife.

La Lobería entrance sign.

First Impressions of La Lobería

Named after the sea lions that frequent its shores, La Lobería is a breathtaking crescent of golden sand bordered by rugged lava rocks and sparkling turquoise waters. As we stepped onto the beach, the sight of playful sea lions basking in the sun set the tone for an incredible experience. A short hike along the rocky trails provided panoramic views of the coastline. We were also provided a closer look at marine iguanas lounging near the shore.

Rocky beach at La Lobería

Equipped with snorkels and fins, we couldn’t wait to dive into the inviting waters. The calm, sheltered bay made it an ideal spot for both beginner and experienced snorkelers. A buoy marked the deeper water. The clarity of the water promised incredible visibility.

Underwater Wonders

The moment we entered the water, we were immersed in a world teeming with life. Schools of colorful fish darted among the coral, their vibrant hues creating a mesmerizing underwater tapestry. We spotted parrotfish, sergeant majors, and even a few playful damselfish curiously swimming around us. Pro Tip: Consider bringing an underwater camera. I really wish I had brought one with us.

A Frigate Bird greeting visitors to La Lobería

One of the highlights of the day was encountering sea turtles, gracefully gliding through the water with an effortless elegance. Our encounter was out beyond the buoys, so we were only able to observe them briefly as they headed to deeper water. Watching these gentle giants up close was a humbling experience that reminded us of the delicate balance of life in this unique ecosystem.

Sea Lion, inspiration for the name La Lobería

Of course, true to its name, La Lobería’s sea lions stole the show. These inquisitive creatures swam alongside us, their playful antics begging to be captured on film. But someone didn’t bring an underwater camera…so… One young sea lion seemed particularly intrigued, twirling and flipping as if inviting us to join in its underwater games. Another gnawed at the rope tethering the buoys in place. They were delightful to watch.

La Lobería – A Memorable Experience

As we reluctantly left the water, the beauty of La Lobería lingered with us. The combination of stunning natural landscapes, abundant marine life, and unforgettable wildlife interactions made it a true highlight of our time in the Galápagos.

If you’re visiting San Cristóbal, a trip to La Lobería is a must. Whether you’re snorkeling, hiking, or simply soaking in the scenery, this magical spot offers an intimate glimpse into the wonders of the Galápagos. It’s an experience we’ll cherish forever.

Savoring Flavors at Midori: Our First Meal in the Galapagos

After a day of exploring the natural wonders of San Cristóbal in the Galápagos Islands, we stopped for respite at Midori Restaurant. Midori is a charming waterfront restaurant in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. Specializing in Japanese cuisine with a unique Galápagos twist, Midori offered reasonably priced meals with exceptional presentation.

Midori Restaurant in San Cristobal, Galapagos

Midori Restaurant Atmosphere and Ambiance

Stepping into Midori, we were greeted by a cozy yet modern setting, blending clean Japanese design with touches of local flair. The intimate space made for a relaxed dining experience, perfect for unwinding after a day of activities. The natural lighting and friendly staff created an inviting atmosphere, setting the tone for the culinary journey ahead. We took a seat on the second floor facing the water. Our meal was complimented by the sights and sounds of the harbor.

Midori Restaurant menu

A Fusion of Japanese and Local Ingredients

The menu at Midori Sushi Pub offers an impressive range of options, from sushi and sashimi to creative fusion dishes. We started with a selection of fresh sushi rolls, each crafted with precision and featuring locally sourced seafood. I opted for some local flavor, selecting the Lomo Saltado. My son went the Japanese route, opting for the Ramen. I don’t recall what my wife ordered. All of the dishes arrived with precise presentation. However, the dishes arrived at different times, which is something we are not accustomed to.

The meals were filled with flavor. My beef was a bit on the tough side, but it tasted good. The presentation was immaculate. There were significant gaps in the timing of the dishes arriving, which made things a bit uncomfortable. How long does one wait politely for another dish to arrive? Aside from that consideration the ambience, flavors, options and pricing were all reasonable. The entrees averaged around twenty dollars, which seemed typical of the restaurants in town.

Desserts and Final Thoughts on Midori

To end the meal, we were intrigued by the matcha cheesecake. However, we were satisfied by our entrees and opted to skip dessert. The dessert menu definitely had worthwhile options to consider. Other options included a version of creme brulee or a cardamom flavored brownie. We opted to go for coffee nearby instead.

Midori offers a celebration of flavor, creativity, and the Galápagos’ unique culinary identity. Whether you’re a fan of Japanese cuisine or simply looking for an exceptional dining experience in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, Midori was a worthwhile destination. Not our best meal in the Galapagos, but we would definitely go back if this were a restaurant nearby.

Hotel Galapagos Planet: Our Island Adventure Begins Here

During our Galapagos adventure, we stayed at Hotel Galapagos Planet in San Cristóbal. The hotel proved to be an excellent home base for exploring this incredible island. Located just a short walk from the town’s bustling waterfront, the hotel offered a mix of comfort, convenience, and charm that made our stay unforgettable.

Galapagos Planet Hotel Exterior

Hotel Galapagos Planet – Comfortable Rooms

Upon arrival, we were greeted with warm smiles and a refreshing tropical juice, a small but thoughtful touch that set the tone for our visit. The hotel has a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere, blending perfectly with the island’s vibe. Our room was clean, featuring air conditioning—a must-have in the Galapagos heat—and modern amenities like Wi-Fi. The comfortable bed and calming décor made it a great place to recharge. After days of hiking, snorkeling, and wildlife spotting it was a welcome retreat. After spending several days in the Amazon without air conditioning, it felt like a luxury.

Guest room at Hotel Galapagos Planet

The room itself was merely adequate. Nothing exceptional. It was clean and tidy, yet cramped. The bathroom and shower could use some updating. The public balcony was a highlight, providing a quiet spot to enjoy a morning coffee or relax in the evening. From our perch, we could listen to the distant sounds of sea lions and waves crashing on the shore. The hotel staff were attentive and accommodating, always ready to help with directions or recommendations for local dining and activities.

Location, Location, Location

Hotel Galapagos Planet enjoys a decent location (although everything is walking distance in the small waterfront community). The hotel is just minutes from the waterfront, shops, and restaurants of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. We loved the convenience of being able to stroll to the nearby pier to watch playful sea lions or browse local boutiques for souvenirs.

Sea lion relaxing beneath a picnic table.

The hotel has a small gift shop for any last minute gifts you might need. The gift shop also had a small coffee bar where guests can fix a cup of coffee before finding a quiet spot to relax. The prices of the gift shop, like all gift shops in the Galapagos, were a bit inflated. I wouldn’t call the prices outrageous, but would rather just suggest buying Galapagos themed gifts in Quito or Guayaquil.

Final Thoughts on Hotel Galapagos Planet

Our stay at Hotel Galapagos Planet added a layer of comfort and ease to our unforgettable Galapagos journey. With its friendly service, comfortable accommodations, and unbeatable location, the hotel was an ideal base for exploring the wonders of San Cristóbal. There were some children enjoying the pool the day before we left, but we didn’t have an opportunity to spend any time at the pool as our trip was packed with adventure.

If you’re planning a trip to the Galapagos, we highly recommend staying here for a relaxing and hassle-free experience. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or visiting the islands for the first time, Hotel Galapagos Planet provides the perfect mix of tranquility and adventure.

A Smooth Journey to the Galapagos: Flying Avianca Airlines

Our adventure to the Galapagos Islands began with a seamless flight from Quito to San Cristóbal, courtesy of Avianca Airlines. This leg of the journey, while often overlooked in the excitement of reaching the iconic archipelago, proved to be an essential and pleasant part of the experience. Avianca delivered a comfortable and efficient service that set the tone for our Galapagos exploration.

Avianca Airlines photo

Check-In and Boarding

The day began early at Quito’s Mariscal Sucre International Airport. Avianca Airlines made the check-in process remarkably smooth. We were prepared with our Transit Control Card (TCC) from the Galapagos Transit Counter, an essential step for anyone flying to the islands. Before checking our bags at the counter, we had to have them screened. A small green zip tie was then placed around the zippers showing they had been screened. Avianca’s staff were friendly and efficient, ensuring our documents were in order and answering any questions with a smile.

Avianca Airlines gate information for Galapagos

Boarding was well-organized, with clear instructions and a fairly punctual start. Avianca boards by zones, although we had to take a bus from the terminal to the aircraft, so the boarding zones end up getting somewhat mixed up. Avianca’s attention to detail in managing passengers was reassuring, especially considering the additional requirements for Galapagos-bound flights, such as the baggage inspections for invasive species.

Avianca Airlines In-Flight Comfort and Service

The flight itself was quite a bit longer than a direct flight would have been. Our flight traveled via Guayaquil, where more than half of the passengers on the the aircraft disembarked. That was great for those of us at the rear of the plane, giving us plenty of room to stretch out. Avianca’s cabin crew were attentive and professional, ensuring all passengers had a pleasant experience. The crew did seem a bit testy with some passengers who were not following instructions while the aircraft refueled. The aircraft itself was clean and well-maintained, with comfortable seating that made the two-hour flight pass quickly.

Kicker Rock through the airplane window.

We were offered a light snack and refreshments during the journey, a thoughtful touch for such a brief flight. Gazing out of the window, we were treated to breathtaking views of Ecuador’s coast before finally catching sight of the Galapagos Islands. Our first indication that we were close was our sighting of Kicker Rock. The crew passed through the cabin, spraying a sterilization spray into the overhead compartments prior to our arrival.

Arrival at San Cristóbal

Landing at San Cristóbal Airport was an exciting moment. Avianca managed the deplaning process efficiently, and we were soon immersed in the unique atmosphere of the Galapagos. The small, welcoming airport made customs and entry procedures straightforward. As we passed through Customs, we paid $200 per person (cash) to cover the entry fee.

Avianca Airlines arriving at the terminal in San Cristobal.

After passing through Customs, passengers wait behind a yellow line around the baggage area. The bags are offloaded and placed in a series of lines. Once all of the bags are unloaded, a K9 quickly passes through the rows searching for contraband. The dog worked quickly and efficiently, finishing his duties in two or three minutes. We were then invited to retrieve our bags, which went very quickly. With bags in hand and anticipation in the air, we stepped outside, ready to begin our Galapagos adventure.

Final Thoughts on Avianca Airlines

Avianca Airlines provided a reliable and enjoyable start to our Galapagos journey. Their seamless service, combined with the stunning vistas and excitement of the destination, made this flight far more than just a way to get from point A to point B.

View of San Cristobal as our airplane landed.

I would have preferred a direct flight to San Cistobal, but would still recommend Avianca Airlines for its professionalism, comfort, and efficiency. The journey was a comfortable way to begin an unforgettable experience in one of the world’s most extraordinary destinations.

Cocoa Square: A Flavorful Stop at Middle of the World

During our exploration of Ciudad Mitad del Mundo, one unexpected highlight was our visit to Cocoa Square—a charming corner dedicated to celebrating Ecuador’s world-class cacao. Nestled within the Middle of the World City complex, Cocoa Square offered us a delicious journey into the rich heritage of Ecuadorian chocolate-making. The visit was a blend of history, craftsmanship, and indulgent flavors.

Cacao museum at chocolate square

A Taste of Ecuador’s Chocolate Legacy

Ecuador is globally renowned for its premium cacao, particularly the prized Cacao Arriba. At Cocoa Square, we delved into the fascinating history of this “food of the gods,” learning how cacao has been a cornerstone of Ecuadorian culture and economy for centuries.

Chocolate processing display at cocoa square

The self-guided, self-paced museum was filled with the irresistible aroma of chocolate. We were drawn into various displays showcasing the bean-to-bar journey. From cacao pods to finished chocolate bars, every step of the process was beautifully presented. The craftsmanship and dedication behind Ecuador’s chocolate industry was evident in the displays.

Tasting the Magic at Cocoa Square

One of the best parts of our visit was the opportunity to taste an array of chocolates crafted by local artisans. Each bite told a story—whether it was a smooth, dark chocolate bar with floral undertones or a milk chocolate infused with exotic Amazonian flavors like guanábana and golden berries.

chocolate products (CBD) at cocoa square

We particularly loved sampling chocolate paired with unique ingredients like chili peppers and sea salt, which showcased the creativity and boldness of Ecuadorian chocolatiers. They even had chocolate CBD (which I did not try).

Cooling Off On a Hot Day

It was a hot day on the Equator which gave us an excuse to cool off with a cold brew. I was particularly drawn to a large can of chocolate porter, which my son and I agreed to split. We found a table and were brought a couple of glasses to pour the beer into. Sipping chocolate porter while immersed in the fragrance of every imaginable chocolate was sheer delight.

Shopping for Sweet Memories

After indulging in the tastings, we couldn’t resist picking up a few treats to take home. Cocoa Square’s shop featured beautifully packaged chocolates, various cacao-based products, and even chocolate desserts. We indulged a bit, but also picked up a couple of chocolate bars for the folks back home! The shop has chocolate bars from a wide variety of Ecuadorian chocolatiers.

Tips for Visiting Cocoa Square

  • Bring your curiosity: Ask questions and engage with the artisans to learn more about cacao and chocolate-making.
  • Try everything: Don’t miss the chance to sample unique flavors you won’t find anywhere else. Samples are free.
  • Take something home: The high-quality chocolates and other cacao-based products make excellent souvenirs.
  • Allow extra time: Cocoa Square is worth lingering over as you enjoy tastings and explore the displays. Or simply sip a delicious cacao porter!

A Sweet Highlight

Cocoa Square turned out to be one of the most delightful stops during our time at the Middle of the World City. It offered more than just the chance to satisfy a sweet tooth—it was an immersive experience into Ecuador’s chocolate heritage, connecting us to the country’s history and traditions through one of its most iconic products. It also helped get the taste of cuy out of my mouth.

For chocolate lovers and curious travelers alike, Cocoa Square is a must-visit destination. Whether you’re savoring a decadent truffle or learning the art of chocolate-making, it’s a place where flavors and culture come together in the most delicious way possible.
